Pongo

Yes, he’s probably not a Dalmatian but he had spots and the "name". There is no way we could turn our backs on Pongo. We agreed to take him…a few days later the shelter informed us that he was heartworm positive….and asked if we still wanted him. There was no hesitation …the answer was yes.

.Pongo had been at this shelter for 3 long months.  We can only imagine how this boy felt in a cold loud pen for 3 months. Do you think dogs anticipate getting out of the pen? We think they do. Whether it’s a walk to the euthanasia room or to the outside world they want out of that pen. We can't imagine why visitors did not pick him.  He's a friendly, happy dog.

From his foster mom….

Pongo made the trip from South Carolina to Harrisburg where I picked him up.  What a love!  He has trust from everyone and gets along so great with other dogs!  How on earth this boy landed in a shelter is beyond me!  I took him up and settled him into a crate and never one accident did he have! He went outside to potty and it was not very long after he could go outside with my other dogs without any issues!

Pongo went to see Dr. Moss in State College.  Dr. Moss did the heartworm test and confirmed he was positive. He then checked him for parasites and found had hookworm.  We were sent home with panacur for the hookworms and on December 22, 2008 he would be starting his heartworm treatment.

Pongo and I headed off to State College early this morning.  He did great in the truck.  While driving I wondered what was going thru his mind.  Did he think he was heading back to the shelter? or to be reunited with his previous owner who surrendered him?  I assured him that all is going to be great, this is just a blink in his life and soon he’ll be reaping all the benefits of a spoiled pooch living the life!
Once at the vet, he was weighed. He’s been eating wonderful food but had lost 2 lbs, bringing him down to 45.90 pounds.  Dr. Moss was sure it's the heartworm and all the displacement of what and where he's been through. They did a complete IDEXX renal panel on him and x-rayed his heart and chest.  All looked good.  He received his first injection of Immiticide which is a Canine Heartworm treatment that is very painful in when injected. I picked Pongo up later that day and he was just as I left him.  His tail never stopped wagging! The staff said he is so sweet and all fell in love with him

Pongo is still a happy boy!  He has one more heartworm treatment and will be neutered after that as well.

Pongo's medical bills are to date totaling $547.01.  Pongo still needs one more injection of Immiticide.

December 23, 2008... Pongo happily greets me with tail wagging 60 miles per hour!  I think he's pretty happy to see me for sure and again banging that tail so happily.  All went well and his first heartworm treatment was a success!!

January 19, 2009..... Here we go again!!  Pongo so loves these rides!  Again watching out of the back of the truck watching people in cars behind me. He happily greets everybody in the vet office and his weight is now at 49 lbs!!  Everything goes well and I'll be picking him up tomorrow. The bill was $110.65 for today.

January 20, 2009.....Again, Pongo greets me with unconditional love and with just going thru heartworm treatment it's amazing how nothing gets this boy down!  Always happy and smiling and that 60 mile an hour tail wag!! He is a joy!

January 24, 2009.. I took some good pictures of Pongo this morning.  I keep telling him he’s getting closer to finding a forever family soon. (As I do all the homeless girls and boys that cross my path here) ... soon he will be lounging on someone's couch and taking rides just to go for a ride and not to go to the vet office.  Although, he loves everybody and does not seem to care where he's going! His heartworm treatment is now over and we need to check and make sure we killed all the heartworm.  We have scheduled an appointment on Feb 15 for the check up.  His next step is to be neutered and then he's ready to begin his new life with a great family!!!  We expect his neutering to cost around $200.

To date (1/27/09) $600 of his bill has been paid. We’ll owe for his neuter and recheck come Feb 15th. If you are interested in making a donation to help with Pongo’s neuter it would be greatly appreciated.
